国連が人間開発指数(Human Development Index)を1990年から導入しているが、イタリアのボッコーニ大学Simone Ghislandi教授は人間の寿命の公平性を加えたHuman Life IndexがHDIの欠点を訂正すると主張している。HLIでは日本は世界2位となっている（HDIでは19位）。
