The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED), funding agency in medical field in Japan, has established Strategic Center of Biomedical Advanced Vaccine Research and Development for Preparedness and Response (SCARDA). With Yen 150.4 billion fund, it will develop vaccines for infectious diseases and new modalities that contribute to vaccine development. The center is expected to take speedy actions to cope with emergence of new vaccines based on the knowledge, technologies, and evidences it accumulates.
KAKENHI to have an International Leading Research Program

The Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) has newly established "International Leading Research Program (tentative translation)" in its KAKENHI (grants-in-aid for scientific research). This new program will allow Japanese research groups led by excellent research leaders to play active in international networks to produce world-level research results, internationalize the research area, and advance the research level. Postdocs and graduate students can participate in the research groups.

As reported in this column in February (https://scirex.grips.ac.jp/en/topics/archive/220301_2842.html), the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI) is continuing discussions on Establishing World-class Startup Ecosystem in Japan. The discussions review various Japanese systems from education, brain circulation, SBIR, through tax to extract issues and explore how to reform the systems to create innovation ecosystem. The discussions will be wrapped up in May 2022 to make its result public.
