The Council for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (CSTI) wrapped up the final draft for the 10 trillion-yen university research fund. Also, the Cabinet Office compiled a package for comprehensive promotion of research universities. CSTI will present the final draft at its regular meeting in February where the final decision is made. In addition, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) will submit relevant bills for establishing world-class research universities and deregulation to the current Diet session. The 10 trillion-yen fund expects 300 billion yen of operational profit per year from the year of 2024. Of that amount, 20 billion yen will support Ph.D. students and some tens of billion yen is expected to be allocated to the world-class research universities in Japan. A few or several universities will be selected at the beginning with the number to gradually increase.
