STEAM education

The Council for STI Policy (CSTI) launched a "kickoff meeting for education and human resources training working group" to take an action on the importance of STEAM education as highlighted in the 6th STI Basic Plan.
Start-up ecosystem
The Cabinet Office, Economy Ministry (METI) and Education and S&T Ministry (MEXT) established "World-level Start-up Ecosystem Strategy" in 2019. To follow up the effort, the ministries asked Dr. Victor Mulas of the World Bank to make an international comparison of such efforts and present where Japan stands at a CSTI meeting: https://www8.cao.go.jp/cstp/gaiyo/yusikisha/20210819/siryo1-2.pdf The discussion on the strategy will continue.
NISTEP Publications: "S&T Indicators 2021" and "Benchmarking Scientific Research 2021"

The National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP) published (1) "Science and Technology Indicators 2021," an annual publication that shows where Japan is among major countries in the world for various S&T activities viewed objectively and by bibliometric analyses; and (2) Benchmarking Scientific Research 2021. One of the findings to note in this publication is that Japan is the 10th in top 10% highly cited papers, following India; and China is the top on the list, followed by the USA.
Digital Agency launched

"Digital Agency" was launched on September 1 to accelerate improvement of Japan's digitization efforts. Its primary mission is to solve the problems caused by the individual digital systems operated by each ministry and agency without coordination and establish a comprehensive all-Japan digital system.
