STI White Paper-2021

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has published its annual S&T White Paper, by changing the name to Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) White Paper. The Japanese ministries and agencies issue white papers to let the people know their ongoing policies and future plans. The theme of the STI White Paper is "Toward Society 5.0." The chapters are: (1) Digitization and Decarbonization; (2) Creation and use of comprehensive "knowledge" to solve social issues; (3) Strengthening of basic research capability for Society 5.0; and (4) Countermeasures for the New Corona Virus. An English version will be issued in fall-winter 2021.

The Council for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (CSTI) presented its "draft" STI Strategy for JFY2021 (April 2021-March 2022). It includes (1) Transformation to sustainable and resilient society; (2) Strengthening of research capability; (3) Education and human resources training; (4) Industry-government collaboration on by-field strategies; (5) Activation of fund cycle (Government R&D investment in the next 5 years: 30 trillion yen; Industrial R&D investment for the next 5 years: 120 trillion yen), and (6) CSTI as the control tower.
A Council for Creating New Industries by Quantum Technology

Eleven Japanese companies who aim to transform the society by quantum technology convened to propose launching a "Council for Creating New Industry by Quantum Technology (provisional translation)." They will ask various companies and experts to participate in the council to launch it in summer 2021. The proposers plan to make Japan a nation of quantum technology innovation.
Renewable Energy University League of Japan

Japanese universities established "Renewable Energy University League of Japan" to minimize the environmental burden and enhance carbon neutralization. It will hold a plenary meeting per year and periodical seminars, exchange information between domestic and overseas universities on research and education, and help matching of researchers.
