6th Goal (quantum computer) of the Moonshot R&D Program will have an international symposium

The Moonshot R&D Program has 7 ambitious research goals to be achieved by 2050. The 6th Goal, led by Dr. KITAGAWA Masahiro, will have an online international symposium on April 23, 2021 from 08:00-11:30 at Japan Standard Time. The project aims to realize "a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer that will transform economy, industry, and security by 2050," focusing on quantum hardware, quantum communication interfaces, and theory and software.

The 6th Basic Plan for Japan's Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy that covers 5 years (JFY2021-2025) and was drafted by the Council for Science, Technology and Innovation (CSTI) has been Cabinet-approved. The points of the Plan are Response to COVID-19, Strengthening of Innovation, Research Capabilities, and Education and Human Resources Development, and the Government R&D investment goal of 30 trillion yen and all-Japan R&D investment 120 trillion yen per 5 years. In 2020 the CSTI modified the S&T Basic Law that was enacted in 1995 to include "Innovation" and "Human Literature and Social Sciences" and renamed it as STI Basic Law.

Official Launch of the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy

Based on the modification of the STI Basic Law that includes establishment of the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy in the Cabinet Office, the Secretariat was officially launched on April 1, 2021. Adding the Secretariat of Health and Medical Policy that used to be under the Cabinet Secretariat, the Cabinet Office now covers STI, Health and Medical, Intellectual Property, Space and Marine policies.
