Abstract

The National Institute of Science and Technology Policy (NISTEP), an in-house MEXT S&T policy research organization, has been conducting a survey to the front-line researchers in industry, government and academia as to their views on STI since 2016. This report is to show the results from the second year of the survey in 2017. The 2017 survey result highlighted a sense of crisis on the base for research activities, including research environments, following the same concern shown in 2016 survey. Also, it was pointed that internationally prominent research results have not been born from the basic research in Japan. On the other hand, good signs were seen in the improvements of undergraduate education, employment of young researchers, and industry-university-collaboration at universities and public research institutions.
