Outline | Amid the circumstances of Japan’s declining research ability, amendment of the Science and Technology Basic Law was made, and the Sixth Science, Technology, and Innovation Basic Plan has started based on the amended law. To strengthen Japan’s research ability, various measures have been taken, including a comprehensive package of strengthening research ability and support for young researchers, establishment of a 10 trillion yen university research fund, and a university promotion package that makes universities to be the cores of regions. Can we expect an improvement in Japan’s research ability through these measures, or are there any challenges remaining to be addressed to render these measures more effective? This session will highlight science and technology and research ability that will work as the source of innovation. We will introduce what is going on in the frontline of relevant policy research, and discuss whether there are any issues that hinder the current measures from effectively functioning, or any issues oversighted. |
