+8th STI Policy Symposium: Creation of Social Innovation by Entrepreneurs

Center for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Studies (CSTIPS)

The expansion of internet and digitization of information in 1990's have brought drastical convenience in the economic activities and our life. However, the "connectivity" it brought in beyond temporal and spatial constraints have also brought high complexities and uncertainties to the economic and social systems. One example is that children are involved in crime cases via social networks that is beyond the parents' imagination. Also, the traditional "connection" that has nurtured the bondage of local community residents is becoming weak, which is ultimately causing death without being noticed by anybody.

To deal with such social issues, "Social Business" has been emerging. As the activities that cope with social issues do not always have already-made markets, social business needs to go through "Social Innovation" in order to create new businesses and is promoted by the "Social Entrepreneurs" who challenges to create new social values.

This symposium will discuss how to train such entreporeneurs and form "Innovation Ecosystem" that is the base for social entrepreneurs' activities.
